Liverpool open talks over Italy international midfielder deal

Liverpool last remodelled their midfield back in 2023.

Jurgen Klopp and then-sporting director Jorg Schmadtke overhauled the Reds’ midfield – bringing in the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.

It’s fair to say those deals have been successes – with Liverpool adding the EFL Cup to their trophy collection in 2024 before winning last season’s 2024/25 Premier League title.

The time has come however to consider adjustments to the midfield – owing in part to uncertainty over some players’ futures.

We could see Curtis Jones sold for example as the homegrown star stalls on a new contract. Endo – like Jones – is out of contract in 2027 with the club having listened to several offers for the Japan captain over previous transfer windows.

Sandro Tonali leaving Newcastle

Alexis Mac Allister has been heavily linked with Real Madrid and it remains to be seen what kind of conclusion contract talks reach with Gravenberch and Szoboszlai too.

It’s no wonder we’ve seen several midfield targets associated with an Anfield move ahead of the window opening. And one of those who HAS been sounded out for a deal is Newcastle’s wantaway playmaker Sandro Tonali.

The 25-year-old has been on Tyneside since 2023 – establishing himself as a consistent presence in both the Premier League and Champions League.

But it looks like the Italian international’s time with the Toon could be coming to an end. Under contract until 2028 the player’s agent revealed last week that it was perhaps time to consider his future.

Liverpool make contact for Tonali

Newcastle will be against losing him for nothing in two years and so could be forced to entertain bids this summer instead.

And a report in TEAMtalk is now claiming that Liverpool – as well as Arsenal and Manchester City have opened talks with the midfield schemer’s entourage over the terms of a deal.

“Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City have all made contact with Tonali’s camp,” the report reads.

Tonali wants Serie A return

But right now Premier League suitors appear to be in second place – with Tonali preferring a return to Serie A for family reasons.

“The midfielder’s heart is pulling him back to Italy, where he wants to settle again with his family,” the report reads.

“Juventus and Inter Milan are both extremely keen to make that happen.”
