Mbappé in Madrid UCL squad amid fitness woes

Kylian Mbappé has been named in Real Madrid‘s matchday roster for the upcoming game against Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday, despite some concerns regarding the forward’s fitness.

Mbappé did not participate in the training session with his teammates at Valdebebas on Tuesday due to a muscle injury, and the announcement of the squad to face City was postponed while awaiting medical evaluations.

According to a source at ESPN, Mbappé was eager to play, though he would not be at full fitness for the match, and it was still unclear whether he would be in the starting lineup or start from the bench.

Mbappé has registered 25 goals across all competitions this season, netting nine for Madrid in the Champions League.

The match against City at the Bernabéu poses a significant challenge for Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, who has faced criticism following just one win in five LaLiga matches, including a 2-0 loss at home to Celta Vigo on Sunday.

ESPN has reported that Madrid president Florentino Pérez convened with club executives to discuss Alonso’s future following the defeat to Celta.

Mbappé netted four times in Madrid’s last Champions League match, a thrilling 4-3 victory over Olympiacos, and also scored a hat trick against Kairat Almaty and two goals against Olympique Marseille, although he was unable to score in games against Juventus and Liverpool.

Madrid will be missing seven additional first-team players for the City match, including Dean Huijsen and Eduardo Camavinga, who were not selected for the squad.

Éder Militão, David Alaba, Ferland Mendy, Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also absent for the encounter.
