The Orlando Pride are in detailed talks to secure prominent Mexican midfielder Lizbeth Ovalle in a transaction that would set a new benchmark in women’s soccer transfers, multiple sources have informed CBS Sports. This announcement is expected to occur before the conclusion of the NWSL transfer window on Aug. 25, with the reigning champions Pride poised to invest Tigres $1.5 million and commit to Ovalle on a deal lasting until 2027, including a mutual option for 2028, according to sources.
Various reports from Mexico on Monday suggested that the fee could escalate to $2 million, although sources engaged in the negotiations affirmed the figure of $1.5 million. The ultimate amount, nonetheless, establishes a new record, surpassing the previous mark set by U.S. women’s national team player Naomi Girma when she transferred to Chelsea FC for $1 million, and later exceeded by Canadian international Olivia Smith after her move to Arsenal at a cost of $1.34 million.
Ovalle was widely regarded as a leading talent globally during the recent transfer period, attracting interest from FC Barcelona, Washington Spirit, and teams within the WSL. The winger departs Tigres following nearly ten years, boasting nine titles and 136 goals, and she is a pivotal starter for the Mexico women’s national team.
This acquisition would enhance Orlando’s roster as they seek another championship run in the final phase of the regular season, presently positioned third in the standings after Matchday 16, trailing first-place Kansas City by 12 points.
