Tom Latham and Devon Conway from New Zealand made history as the first opening partnership in Test cricket to achieve centuries in each innings, as the Kiwis positioned the West Indies with a record-setting chase of 462 runs for victory.
Latham tallied scores of 137 and 101 in the concluding Test of the series, while Conway added a 100 in the second innings to his 227 from the first.
The duo contributed a total of 323 in the first innings and amassed 515 runs together throughout the match, setting a new record for the highest opening partnership total in Test history.
Conway also became the 10th player in Test cricket to accomplish the rare feat of scoring both a double century and a century in the same match.
He joins the ranks of Greg Chappell, Sunil Gavaskar, Shubman Gill, Graham Gooch, Marnus Labuschagne, Brian Lara, Lawrence Rowe, Kumar Sangakkara, and Doug Walters who have achieved this milestone.
Earlier on day four, the Windies were bowled out for 420 – trailing by 155 runs – before Latham and Conway returned to bat.
New Zealand’s opening pair, together with Kane Williamson (40) and Rachin Ravindra (46), pushed their team to 306-2 before declaring, thereby requiring the visitors to chase 462 to secure victory and level the series.
The West Indies openers completed the day at 43-0, with John Campbell laboring to score two runs from 50 deliveries, while Brandon King contributed with 37.
