MANILA, Philippines — Manny Pacquiao has suggested that a rematch of his 2015 spectacle with Floyd Mayweather Jr. might be on the horizon for next year.
«At this moment, we are engaged in numerous discussions about my upcoming fight; there’s a potential rematch with Floyd Mayweather,» Pacquiao stated at a press conference on Wednesday. «There are many negotiations happening, so it’s difficult to determine what fight I will announce next. I’m waiting for the final deal.»
A world champion across eight divisions from flyweight to super welterweight, Pacquiao was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June. A month later, he came out of retirement and narrowly missed reclaiming a title at age 46, with Mario Barrios holding onto the WBC welterweight championship after a majority draw.
Pacquiao initially hung up his gloves in 2021 with a record of 62-8-2 including 39 KOs, having fought in some of the most significant events of the 2000s. He mentioned that he always aimed for the fiercest rivals to continually challenge himself.
He served as a senator in the Philippines from 2016 to 2022 and was unsuccessful in his quest for the presidency in 2022.
Pacquiao faced defeat against Mayweather in 2015 in what was promoted as the «fight of the century,» but he later revealed that a shoulder injury had hindered him.
«I would be thrilled to have another fight, a rematch with Floyd Mayweather,» Pacquiao expressed. «I hope that in the negotiations, we can come to an understanding and negotiate effectively.»
Mayweather, 48, may have a hectic 2026 ahead.
CSI Sports announced last month an exhibition match between the undefeated Mayweather and Mike Tyson scheduled for next year. No details regarding the date or location were mentioned in the announcement.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao will be directing his attention to the new generation.
His son, Jimuel, 24, is set to make his professional debut against American Brendan Lally on Nov. 29 in California.
«I’m thrilled, but I’m concerned for my son,» Manny Pacquiao remarked. «He started late … but that is his passion, so I will encourage him. I’m praying for his safety during the fight.»
