QUINTET announces Dubai debut, bringing team-based grappling to the Middle East

The Japanese martial arts organization QUINTET has revealed its official launch into the Middle Eastern market, with its first regional event, QUINTET 5, scheduled for Dubai on October 23, 2025.

This announcement was made during a press conference this week at Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, part of Fight Week — a significant sporting initiative that showcases international MMA events in the UAE capital. The event was presented by Kazushi Sakuraba, the legendary founder of QUINTET and a prominent figure in Japanese MMA history, along with Tarek Suleiman, QUINTET’s regional partner and an experienced martial artist. Mr. Yanagisawa, General Manager of QUINTET Japan, was also present at the announcement.

The event gained extensive regional and international media attention and was attended by notable figures from the MMA community, including Ali Al Qaisi, a top featherweight from the Arab world, and internationally acclaimed referee Marc Goddard.

Recognized for its unique five-on-five team grappling format, QUINTET does away with points and judges entirely — matches conclude with submission or draw. This format combines strategic team tactics with the essence of traditional martial arts and has already made a significant impact in Japan and the United States.

“For Japanese martial artists, the name Abu Dhabi has always been held in high esteem,” remarked Sakuraba, who received a warm response from the audience. “We have long observed how the UAE has embraced Jiu-Jitsu, transforming it into more than just a sport — it has grown into a cultural and national phenomenon. Launching QUINTET here is not just symbolic but significant. The community appreciates the art. The government fosters it. And the athletes here embody it.”

Suleiman, who previously competed in QUINTET, highlighted the intention behind this initiative. “This isn’t merely a one-time occurrence. We aim to create something enduring,” he expressed. “The UAE has emerged as a global hub for combat sports, and it will now be the center for team-based grappling in this region. With QUINTET, we strive to offer athletes a fresh platform — one that emphasizes collaboration, strategy, and team pride.”

QUINTET 5 in Dubai signifies the beginning of a comprehensive plan to create a sustainable grappling community in the Middle East. Teams from across the MENA region are anticipated to take part in the October event as organizers aim to develop a long-lasting league and talent pipeline that corresponds with the region’s expanding aspirations in combat sports.
