Sabally battling concussion, out for Unrivaled tip

Phoenix Mercury forward Satou Sabally has been declared unavailable to participate in Unrivaled for an indefinite period as she continues to experience persistent symptoms from a concussion incurred during Game 3 of the WNBA Finals, the 3-on-3 league announced on Friday.

Sabally suffered the concussion on October 8 during the final quarter of Game 3. With 4:26 remaining in the match, her head struck a Las Vegas Aces defender’s knee as Sabally tumbled to the ground pursuing the rebound.

She stayed on the floor for an extended time before attempting to rise. Seeming unsteady, Sabally was guided back to the floor before ultimately being assisted to the locker room by a teammate and a member of the Mercury staff.

Sabally was excluded from Game 4 of the series, during which the Aces swept the Mercury and secured their third WNBA title in four years.

Sabally, who is signed to a multi-year contract with Unrivaled, was expected to play for Phantom BC when the league’s second season begins in January. In Unrivaled’s first season, Sabally averaged 15.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists while with Phantom, which finished last in the standings (4-10).

She has not been ruled out for the entire season, with Unrivaled stating that she will be reassessed at a later date. Golden State Valkyries guard Tiffany Hayes has been brought in to take Sabally’s place on Phantom. Hayes participated in Unrivaled last season with Laces BC.

Unrivaled will commence its new season on January 5.
