Sources: Fired Pry hired back by Va. Tech as DC

Brent Pry, the former head coach of Virginia Tech football dismissed by the institution in September, is poised to make a comeback as the defensive coordinator for the Hokies under James Franklin, as confirmed by sources to ESPN.

This is an atypical maneuver in prominent college football, as Pry will return to the program he directed from 2022 until September 14, when he lost his position after starting 0-3. His record as head coach for the Hokies is 16-24, which included bowl appearances in the last two seasons. Virginia Tech brought in Franklin, who was let go as the coach at Penn State in October, as their new head coach on November 17.

Prior to his tenure at Virginia Tech, Pry acted as defensive coordinator for Franklin at Penn State. He also held the position of co-defensive coordinator under Franklin at Vanderbilt from 2011 to 2013. Franklin showed significant emotion while speaking about Pry during his introductory press conference with Virginia Tech, highlighting that Pry’s father, Jim, had been Franklin’s coach during his college years at East Stroudsburg.

«I have known Brent for more than 30 years,» Franklin stated. «… I hold a lot of admiration for Brent and his family. I recognize that he dedicated himself completely to this place. I believe this place is improved today because of Brent and the dedication he displayed.»

CBS initially reported that Pry was being considered for the defensive coordinator position under Franklin. At 55, Pry began his career as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech under Frank Beamer.

At the time of his termination, Virginia Tech owed Pry around $6 million, which may be adjusted if he secures another coaching position.
