A different coach and nearly a totally revamped squad – yet there was someone at Sunderland who wouldn’t forget the moment quickly.
Almost two years prior, following Newcastle’s convincing 3-0 triumph at the Stadium of Light in an FA Cup fourth-round encounter, the Magpies reveled by taking a complete squad picture down on the field in front of their ecstatic fans.
This occasion, it was the Black Cats’ moment to shine.
Nick Woltemade’s own goal secured Sunderland a noteworthy victory against their rival in the first Premier League Tyne-Wear derby since 2016 – the home side commemorated the full-time whistle by mimicking Newcastle’s fanfare photo.
When questioned about who came up with the concept, Black Cats manager Regis le Bris grinned and replied simply: «Always unpredictable, inventive, versatile.»
Defender Dan Ballard, who netted an own goal in the 2024 FA Cup tie, was the lone Sunderland player to start in both encounters.
He shared his burning desire to rectify the previous defeat, declaring to Sky Sports: «You can’t articulate [the emotion]. Losing to Newcastle was unbearably painful for the players and fans, so we felt we had disappointed them. We’re thrilled with this victory.
«It conditioned us more for today. We entered with elevated quality in this squad, true leaders, we persevered, battled vigorously, and I believe we earned the victory.»

‘Victories in derbies are essential, the manner is irrelevant’
Sunderland, ranked seventh, is savoring a remarkable comeback to the top tier after achieving promotion through the play-offs last season.
The Black Cats have attained 26 points across 16 matches, their highest tally at this stage of a Premier League season since 2000-01 (also 26), when they ultimately finished in seventh place.
They have yet to suffer a league defeat at the Stadium of Light, which showcased an electrifying atmosphere for most of Sunday afternoon.
«In derbies, you must win, irrespective of how,» stated captain Granit Xhaka to Sky Sports.
«This squad merits so much more – and the respect we deserve for our league standing is incredible, and we are putting in tremendous effort.»
Sunderland remains unbeaten in their last 10 league encounters against Newcastle (seven victories and three draws), their longest streak against the Magpies.
The last league triumph for Newcastle over Sunderland took place in August 2011.
Le Bris expressed to Sky Sports that he felt «proud and content» with the outcome.
«It was a derby, and our supporters expected [us to win],» he continued. «This victory is well-deserved, we were disciplined, and the lads were outstanding.
«It’s beneficial for the area, the club, and the fans. We were aware beforehand that this was a significant match, but we must refocus quickly as another daunting challenge against Brighton awaits in a week, so let’s push forward.»
