Timber: Arsenal can use Villa loss as ‘motivation’

Arsenal defender JurriĂ«n Timber is eager to turn his team’s recent last-minute defeat to Aston Villa into a source of motivation for reviving their Premier League title challenge.

The Gunners’ 18-match unbeaten streak across all competitions concluded as Emiliano BuendĂa netted the decisive goal with the final kick of the match, leading Villa to a 2-1 victory.

It proved to be a costly day for Mikel Arteta’s squad as their lead at the top shrank to just two points after Manchester City triumphed over Sunderland.

However, Timber, who had to step in at centre-back due to an injury crisis, believes his team must harness the loss to propel themselves forward.

«Ultimately, we need to view it as motivation and ultimately as a source of strength, because it has happened and we must accept it and strive to improve,» he stated.

«During the season, setbacks like this can occur, and we just need to respond positively afterward.»

Timber, traditionally a right-back, was compelled to play centrally due to injuries affecting central defenders William Saliba and Gabriel.

Cristhian Mosquera has also been sidelined for «weeks» with an ankle issue, and Timber states that the fitness challenges have impacted Arsenal’s season.

«Yes, it is [a disruption],» he acknowledged. «I believe we have a fantastic squad. Players who step in usually perform admirably, but of course, it isn’t always straightforward.

«We can’t field the same players week in and week out, and if more injuries occur, it becomes difficult.

«However, this is also part of… it’s a common occurrence during the season.

«It happens at every club. It’s the same for us, and we just need to manage that and win our matches.»

Villa’s triumph announced their intent in the title race as they closed the gap to three points behind Arsenal.

Unai Emery’s team is on a winning streak, having secured victories in nine of their last ten Premier League fixtures.

They initially led at Villa Park thanks to a goal from Matty Cash, but were equalized by Leandro Trossard early in the second half.

BuendĂa’s late goal triggered joyous celebrations.

Cash remarked on the club’s official website: «We must take it one game at a time and continue working diligently, adapting to each situation.

«Currently, we are on an excellent streak, but we recognize that it isn’t even Christmas yet.

«We need to maintain our standards, stay consistent, and see where this journey leads us.»
