CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Bud Clark registered a pick-six in the first half, while Kevorian Barnes had a 75-yard touchdown sprint on the very first snap of the second half, which led TCU to decisively defeat North Carolina 48-14 on Monday night, ruining Bill Belichick’s debut in college coaching.
The 73-year-old Belichick, who previously achieved six Super Bowl championships during his 24-year tenure as head coach of the NFL’s New England Patriots, saw his Tar Heels (0-1) score on their opening drive. However, the Horned Frogs swiftly seized control, sending a packed and hostile crowd toward the exits long before the game reached the fourth quarter.
Devean Deal’s 37-yard scoop-and-score came in the third quarter.
Josh Hoover from TCU threw for two touchdowns, and Jordan Dwyer made nine receptions for 136 yards, including a 27-yard TD in the first quarter. Trent Battle contributed another touchdown by running unchallenged around the left side for 28 yards, allowing TCU to establish a 41-7 advantage.
Caleb Hood scored the first touchdown for the Tar Heels under Belichick. Quarterback Gio Lopez, a transfer from South Alabama, completed 4 of 10 passes for 69 yards before leaving the game after halftime due to a back injury.
TCU outperformed UNC with a total yardage of 542 to 222.
