Vergil Ortiz Jr showcased his dominance against Erickson Lubin, securing a second-round TKO victory today in Texas, likely paving the way for a significant matchup in 2026 with Jaron “Boots” Ennis.
Ortiz (24-0, 22 KO) successfully defended his interim WBC super welterweight title with this stoppage, occurring officially at 1:30 of the second round. The 27-year-old Ortiz had Lubin (27-3, 19 KO) cornered against the ropes, and with composure, methodically landed shots that left the 30-year-old southpaw on shaky legs.
Referee James Green deserves notable recognition for his swift action in stopping the bout. Sometimes officials allow situations to continue too long, especially since Lubin maintained a guard as if he was defending, yet the fight had clearly shifted. Green recognized that, intervened promptly, and prevented Lubin from incurring more damage. It was an excellent decision by the official.
This was also a remarkable performance from Ortiz, setting the stage for an exciting confrontation next year.
“We’re prepared for the best. We want to face the best. Boots, step forward,” Ortiz stated in his post-fight remarks, eliciting gasps from the crowd.
The two exchanged a respectful handshake, with Ortiz commenting, “I believe this is the fight that needs to take place. I think this is it.”
“This is the best fight in boxing,” Ennis remarked. “I think he performed well. He looked impressive. But I’m going to demonstrate to the world why I’m the best, and show his team. They’ve been talking recklessly, and I’m going to prove it.”
The friendly atmosphere shifted, with both athletes exchanging words about the origins of their rivalry.
“Your manager’s saying all sorts, Oscar’s saying all kinds, it’s your time, and I’m going to make you pay,” Ennis declared.
“No one here’s going to pay,” Ortiz retorted.
Ennis reiterated that Ortiz is a formidable fighter and mentioned that his promoter Eddie Hearn has contracts ready.
