The New York Yankees have a major need this offseason: starting pitching. The team is coming off a season in which they were knocked out of the playoffs by the Toronto Blue Jays, and pitching will be a critical position to address for a successful 2026 campaign.

“The New York Yankees have a multitude of needs this offseason, but starting pitching ranks near the top of that list. With both Carlos Rodón (elbow) and Gerrit Cole (elbow) set to miss the beginning of the 2026 season, the club should have at least spot open in their rotation next to Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Luis Gil and Will Warren,” SI’s Jack Markowski wrote.

Earlier in the offseason, Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal emerged as a potential target, though he is unlikely to sign an extension.

“Skubal will reset the market for pitchers and become the highest-paid starting pitcher in history, with a realistic starting price north of $400 million. Therefore, even though the Tigers are in position to compete for the postseason next year, it’s likely they shop Skubal at the Winter Meetings and try to make the best trade they can,” The Athletic’s Jim Bowden wrote.

Now, MLB insider Jon Heyman reports that the Yankees have been in talks with the Miami Marlins regarding young flamethrower Edward Cabrera.

“Yankees are talking to Marlins about Edward Cabrera, a terrifically talented pitcher coming off excellent year (3.53 ERA). Cubs and Giants (and others) also believed interested. Marlins pitching depth allows them to consider. Ken Rosenthal 1st mentioned NYY link,” Heyman posted.

If the Yankees can acquire Cabrera in a trade, a rotation featuring Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, and him would be absolutely dominant. The Yankees are eager to return to the World Series after falling short to the Dodgers in 2024.

Cabrera would bolster the starting rotation and provide the Yankees with a highly promising future. While talks are still in the early stages, the front office recognizes that landing him would be a major offseason coup.
